The Kopust branch of Chabad Chassidism was founded by Rabbi Yehudah Leib Schneersohn (1811-1866), also known as the Maharil. The Maharil was the second son of the Tzemach Tzedek, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the third Chabad Rebbe. After the Mahril’s early passing, he was succeeded by his son, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Schneersohn (1830-1900), known by the title of his classic Magen Avos.
The wooden Ohel that once surrounded the adjoining graves of father and son was destroyed during World War II. In 2009, Geder Avos and Oholei Tzadikim located and marked the site where it once stood.
Also buried in Kopust is Rabbi Mordechai Pewzner. Rabbi Mordechai was the rabbi of Orsha and brother of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of the Chabad dynasty..
