The first reliable date on the Jewish presence in Okopy is from the mid-19th century, with a peak Jewish population of 157 in 1900. Some historians have speculated that Okopy is the birthplace of Reb Yisroel Baal Shem Tov.
In 2019 ESJF with the support of Geder Avos and American Jewish philanthropic organizations cleared the site and erected a fence around the cemetery.
